First Wednesday at BRG

Movies & Music on the Lawn is Back with All Your Favorites

Baton Rouge Gallery's Movies & Music on the Lawn's return kicks off this month in the beautiful landscape of BREC's City Park. Over the past 18 years, the popular summer film series has paired up dozens of iconic silent films with the best local, contemporary bands in our area. Each band performs a never-before-heard score for the film, which is projected on a huge inflatable screen on the lawn behind the gallery.

The screenings, which take place towards the end of the month, beginning in May, begin at 8 p.m. (or sundown – whichever comes last) and the $7 price of admission includes free bottomless popcorn.

This year's series is once again presented by Whole Foods Market and in honor of BRG's 50th anniversary, we'll be celebrating a few of the very best pairings of bands and films from the program's recent history. The first five presentations will all be leading up to a special event in October when BRG brings back the film (Nosferatu) and band (The eXpanded Trio) from the very first Movies & Music on the Lawn (October, 1998).

Movies & Music on the Lawn begins this year's series on Friday, May 27 with the oldest surviving feature-length animated film, Lotte Reiniger's 1926 film, The Adventures of Prince Achmed. The film, created entirely with a stunning sihouette animation technique that Reiniger invented, follows the dashing Prince Achmed as he saves a lovely damsel from evil witches and mythical beasts. The 65-minute film's animation process took three years to complete with each second requiring 24 individually manipulated and filmed frames. Clcik here for a taste of what the film looks like and here for an in-depth look at Lotte Reiniger's technique in creating the film.

Returning to the Movies & Music on the Lawn program to score The Adventures of Prince Achmed, as they did in the summer of 2011, is the beloved Baton Rouge band known as Righteous Buddha. Blending elements of jazz, funk, and jam bands, led by David Hinson and John Smart, the group represents one of the most technically savvy and adventurous groups in Baton Rouge music over the past 15 years.

This year's series:

Friday, May 27 - 'The Adventures of Prince Achmed' with a live score from Righteous Buddha

Saturday, June 25 - 'The Artist' with a live score from Captain Green

Saturday, July 30 - 'Metropolis' with a live score from Matsy

Friday, August 26 - 'Peter Pan' with a live score from The (New) Zeelanders

Friday, September 30 - 'Sunrise' with a live score from Minos the Saint

Friday, October 28 - 'Nosferatu' with a live score from The eXpanded Trio

In 2015, the gallery was honored to partner with Presenting Sponsor Whole Foods Market as well as the series' other sponsors: John G. Turner & Jerry G. Fischer, Forum 35, JCW Productions and Compliance Solutions Group. It is through their generosity - and that of other series sponsors - that the gallery is able to continue to bring this unique event to the community.

Admission to Movies & Music on the Lawn is always free for BRG members and just $7 for non-members. Free, unlimited popcorn is included in the price of admission. The screening begins at 8 pm (or sunset – whichever comes last).
